Online Resource:
Partner talking points
This document provides a quick rundown of the
resources available on each of the six MarcoPolo Partner sites. Download
the Talking Points at the Training
Resource Center.
Training Tip:
Find relevant examples
"When I do a training, I always look at my
participant list in advance and try to come up with sites that fit with
something they are doing in their classroom at that time. I find that
interest in the overview of the MarcoPolo Partner sites is higher
if I am giving examples they can find useful immediately. This way,
participants return to the sites sooner because there is something
specific and useful. Hopefully that begins a pattern of turning to MP for
further resources."

Music from
Across America (Grades
K-5) EDSITEment, National Endowment for the
Humanities Highlighted in the March 2002 MarcoGram, which
celebrates Youth Art and Music Month.
Background to
the lesson In this unit, students listen to a variety of
popular, traditional and ethnic American music, from the evocative sounds
of Native American drumming to the lively sounds of zydeco music from
Louisiana. To develop their listening skills, students use worksheets to
record their impressions about the music they hear. In addition to
learning about musical instruments and the geographic and cultural context
of music, children are encouraged to think about and express their
personal responses to music.
Preparing this
lesson for your training session
Using this
lesson in your training session
- Provide a quick
background of the five different instrument families and types of music
(available in the EDSITEment lesson).
- Separate your
session attendees into five groups, and assign each a musical style as
listed in the lesson.
- Give each
trainee copies of the relevant handouts, and instruct them to listen to
their assigned music and complete the worksheets.
- Collect the
worksheets, and ask the attendees about their experience while using
this lesson. Was it easy to use? What level of computer skills were
necessary? How could you adapt this lesson to different classroom
configurations? For example, how would you use this lesson in a
classroom with only one computer? With a cluster of computers? With a
full lab? How could you adapt this lesson to different teaching styles,
including teacher-centered vs. student-centered and whole group vs.
small group instruction?
Follow-up Lead your attendees in a discussion of how
this lesson can be used by teachers of social studies, geography, music
and language arts. After the discussion, redirect your attendees to the
"Extending the Lesson" component for more
ideas.
How educators and Field Trainers are using
MarcoPolo.
Using MarcoPolo
in Math and Science "We use MarcoPolo in the computer lab,
and we've taken some of the ideas from the computer lab and brought them
into the regular classroom. We use MarcoPolo especially when we
have a research-type question or a 'discovery moment' when we want to look
something up quickly.
"Sometimes I let
kids explore a topic online before I begin teaching it, to let them get
comfortable with it. Other times I'll encourage kids to take the mouse in
hand and start exploring, manipulating the system, learning what connects
to what, and gaining familiarity and comfort with the
topic.
"High and low
achievers in any classroom easily get bored when you're teaching to the
middle-level students. MarcoPolo is a wonderful way to explore
those topics that may be at a different grade
level.
"MarcoPolo
has great lesson plans that teachers can use independently of technology
-- worksheets, resources, activity suggestions, approaches to subjects,
even if you only have access to one, two, three or four
computers."
