Pumpkin Pie for All

Resource Type: Lessons

A "real-life" application of proportional reasoning is presented, in which students also get practice using fractions and units of measure. Students are given a recipe for a single pie (which has 8 slices) and asked to decide how much of the ingredients they would need to make enough for the whole class. While the lesson is presented somewhat so that the students are taken through the solution step by step, students could easily be allowed to devise their own solutions (perhaps working in small groups) to an interesting situation. The activity includes a recording sheet for the students, a collection of pumpkin pie recipes from which the students can choose, and several follow up activities. A really enterprising teacher might even bake pies using the resulting recipe and let the students see whether their solutions are correct!
