This activity has a lesson plan to go with it. The students are able to work in groups and use manipulatives to find a solution to the problem. They must record their findings and answer questions, given by the teacher, about their way of solving the problem. This activity allows students to use a variety of ways to solve the problem. They gain an understanding of the importance of being able to explain their reasoning. They are able to communicate mathematically to others. This type of problem helps to stimulate students' thinking and challenge them to expand on what they know.
